General Information

Office and Lab

Well and Sick Waiting Rooms

It is important to us to maintain two waiting rooms for our patients: one well, one sick. These designations enable us to distance patients as well as protect our infants and others whose immune systems are still building or suppressed. Patients here for a physical, medication check, or conference visit may sit in the well room, as long as everyone with them is well and free from fever, rash, cough and runny nose, while all others should wait in the sick waiting room.

In-House Labs and Immunizations

We perform standard labs in-house, notifying you of results as soon as possible.
Immunizations are an important part of pediatric care, one that we take with the utmost responsibility. Therefore, we stock all required immunizations in-house, so you will never need to make a trip to the Health Department.

Patient Education

At Drs. Black & Benton Pediatrics, we believe in taking a proactive approach to health. Learn about our wellness programs and how they can benefit you.

Free and Easy Parking

Convenient parking is located in front and to the side of our building at 4741 N Broadway. There are two entrances to the lot for your convenience: one from Broadway and one from Adair Drive.

Accessibility

An accessible ramp is located in the center of the building by the outdoor fountain. Please call the office 865.687.1940 from the parking lot and we will assist you from there to the front desk.  Please note that this entrance leads to our back desk. Our main entrance is toward the right side of the building.

Small and Privately Owned

Patients of Black and Benton enjoy many benefits by choosing our small private practice as their children's healthcare home. When you call our office you are greeted by a member of our staff, not a large directory menu. Because we have autonomy as keepers of our patients' medical records and do not have to go through a larger network system, we fill patient requests as expeditiously as possible. Should you require a piece of information, copy of your record, or request for a form or fax, we take care of all of it in-house, usually in one or two business days.

After Hours Concerns

Should an acute illness / situation occur after the office is closed, please phone the office number. The answering service will take your information and refer your concern to the Children’s Hospital nurse triaging our calls. The nurse will assess your concern and provide recommendations, consulting with a physician when indicated. One of the physicians from Drs. Black and Benton is on call every night for the group’s patients. Keep in mind the calls may be “batched,” so if you believe you have a problem of an urgent nature, then indicate so with the exchange operator. For absolute emergencies, dial 911.

Accepted Insurance

We accept nearly all primary commercial insurance coverages through an employer: Aetna, BCBST (NOT BCBST Network L), Cigna, Health Partners, Humana, Tricare, UHC (not HMO), and UMR.  At this time, we do not accept patients with TennCare as a primary or secondary insurance.  Several of our patients choose our practice without insurance, and we work with them as much as possible.  Call (865)687-1940 to speak with our business office with further questions.

Your First Appointment

Newborn

Congratulations on the upcoming arrival of your little one! We encourage you to get set up in our system before the big day so you can focus on one another once your little one is here.
Once your baby is born you can schedule your first appointment.  Most hospitals require you to make this appointment before discharge and will remind you to make the call.
We request that you bring the hospital discharge summary with you to your first appointment.  Download the new patient forms to fill out your paperwork at home before your appointment.

Other Ages

Call anytime to schedule your first appointment. It is simplest if your first appointment with us is a yearly physical, but it can be a sick visit if needed. In either case, knowing the month/year of your last physical is helpful but not required.  Download the new patient forms to complete your paperwork at home before your appointment.
When possible, we recommend requesting a transfer of records from your previous pediatrician two weeks before your appointment. You can fill out the transfer of medical records form and fax it to us completed or come by the office to fill one out in person. We will take care of the rest.

First Appointment Checklist

  • insurance card
  • if newborn, discharge paperwork from hospital and calendar to set up your next appointment
  • list of questions, concerns, and relevant history for the doctor
